Plant of the Week: Saintpaulia

Plant of the Week: Saintpaulia

With their sumptuously velvety, heart-shaped leaves and clusters of delightful little flowers held almost all year round, these beautiful houseplants earn their keep in any home.

Saintpaulias, also known as African violets, hail from the tropical heat of East Africa, but at just 7cm high and 20cm across they’ll fit happily onto any bright (but not directly sunny) windowsill. The secret to success is never to let the leaves get wet. To water, simply fill a saucer and stand your plant in it for about 30 minutes to let it soak up whatever it needs. Add feed once a week to keep those pretty blooms coming without a pause.
